So our first jet-lagged, beer and sausage-laden afternoon/night in Munich seemed to be a success. We powered through our lack of sleep and medicated ourselves with giant pretzels and the local beverage. Some of our highlights from out first day included visiting the Marienplatz (Munich's main square) to see the glockenspiel perform, climbing St. Peter's Church tower (306 steps) for an incredible view of the city center, and visiting the touristy, yet fun, HofbrÀuhaus. We found ourselves an outside table in the beer garden since the inside tables were packed. Our table was between two convivial groups, one Spanish, and one group from Iceland. They were toasting eachother over our heads and singing. We had a great time too but our jet-lag left us in a more mellow mood. It was our first venture in to wursts, sauerkraut, and various other forms of Bavarian potato, cheese, and sausage fare. All of it was very good...but I'm looking forward to my first pork knuckle tonight! Oh, and since we're here in Munich during the Oktoberfest (the 200th anniversary) everyone, and really mean everyone, is wearing traditional Bavarian dress (Lederhosen for men and Dirndl for women). We'll be sure to get some photos of it today.
Glad you are having fun! XOXO
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that's the best looking pretzel I've ever seen! I now have a craving that will only be satisfied by visiting Germany. =)
ReplyDeleteDare I ask what a Pork Knuckle is?
Wow. Great photos and all. Does the jar have pigs knuckles in it? Doesn't look all that tasty but maybe after a couple of beers........
ReplyDeletethe pretzels are delicious. you must try them with bacon and cheese. and GO TO SCHWABING!
ReplyDeleteok do what u want.
tschus!
looks so fun! i would have eaten the pork knuckles. just saying.
ReplyDeleteoh, the magnificent glockenspiel! one of the most ridiculous, gimmicky objects i've ever seen. Rich and I stood in the plaza, staring avidly at it with about five hundred other naive tourists, waiting to be dazzled, only to realize after it did its thing that it would've been totally amazing ... in the Middle Ages. Even the easy-to-impress Japanese tourists were like "What the frick?" consequently, I love it.
ReplyDeletealso, with all those meaty tidbits on the table, i am under the impression that Victoria subsisted only on beer and that very large pretzel? i am fixated on this subject because the yutz actually wrote "one vegetarian meal, please" on her RSVP card, as though I, her sibling, am totally unaware of her dietary restrictions.
ReplyDeletesorry to comment yet again -- it must seem a bit narcissistic -- but it just occured to me that Dan's photo makes me think of "Precious," or, alternatively, a serial killer, like that's the look one would have on his face if you woke up and found him standing over you with a knife and some twine.
